PHOENICIAN WOMEN

The Phoenician Women design involved ancient Greek modes of composition and instrumentation. The piece incorporated the Greek minimalist approach to instrumentation, their drones and repetition, interupted by explosive percussion bursts and their microtonal vocal structures in order to realize the original score for the production. The chorus sang excerpts from the script which was set utilizing these concepts.

This production of Phoenician Women was a Synapse Production directed by David Travis with original music and sound design by Edmund Mooney, sets by Adrian Jones, lights by Thomas Dunn, video design by Thomas Dunn and Hannah Yampolsky, costumes by Melissa Schlachtmeyer and choreography by Eva Lawrence.

The short movie on the left was part of a video collage which ran throughout the production and served as an evocative subliminal commentary, along with the chorus, as the tragedy unfolded on stage.
